#NoExcuse for Abuse – Champions For Change Programme

The NOEXCUSE campaign was started by Carling Black Label in 2017 and FAN was tasked by AB InBev in 2018 with the on-the-ground roll-out of the movement to communities around South Africa. Working closely with CBL we developed a multi-pronged strategy to maximise the effectiveness of the NOEXCUSE messaging across the nation. Called the Champions for Change programme it has been a tremendous success and involves the following key elements:

Soccer events

As the most loved, watched and played sport in the country, soccer is a great way to get men together around a common cause. We stage six-a-side tournaments of 80 or more teams at which we trumpet the NOEXCUSE message and get the men to take the NOEXCUSE pledge. The result is strong buy-in and commitment to authentic masculinity and standing against abuse.

Tavern Interventions

By running NOEXCUSE events in taverns we take the message to the heart of where so much of the abuse and toxic masculinity foments and emerges from. We find that most men are longing to be called out to a sense of purpose and responsibility and many men at these events respond positively to the message of strong, compassionate, nation building masculinity.

College Workshops

Men of college going age are in a learning and growing phase of their lives and hungry for input about how to be authentically masculine. This is a great time to intervene in their lives with messaging and mentorship around positive masculinity. These sessions typically last 2 hours and touch between 150 and 800 young people at a time with the NOEXCUSE message.

Man Camps

We take 100 men at a time away on transformational weekend camps combining adventure activities, training and teaching. The results have been excellent and the stories that come out of the experiences deeply moving. Men return from these camps changed and motivated to bring that change to their communities.

Champion Conversations

We train peer mentors to facilitate conversations with small groups of men around key aspects of masculinity. In these small groups men open up, often for the first time and speak about true masculinity and the challenges they face being a man in their particular circumstances.

Staff Workshops

We run workshops varying in length from 2 hours to a full day for staff members of SA InBev to educate them on the NOEXCUSE and positive masculinity messaging. The result is strong buy-in and personal transformation.
