REPORT:

Situated close to the centre of town the Polokwane campus served us up over 1000 eager students! This was great until the end when T-shirts were handed out and we didn’t have enough for everyone. A tense situation was diffused by some quick-talking and fast retreating members of the FAN team.

  • The workshop itself went very well. Some of the students put on a short play demonstrating how gender-based violence often plays itself out takes place in the surrounding communities and there was good interaction.

  • One student told the audience about a practise in the Sepedi culture that permitted older men to marry young girls as a additional wives or if their current wife or wives had difficulty conceiving.

  • There were some alarming stories highlighting how deeply rooted the problem of toxic masculinity and ill-founded cultural and religious practices have been embedded in society.

A father’s role is to teach one how to appreciate and respect a woman as an individual. It is just unfortunate that I didn’t have one growing up.
